Be doers not hearers only
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Why does James want us to be doers of the word and not just hearers only?
Doers have real faith
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Our doing of the word, that is our works of faith prove that we have saving faith in Christ to begin with.
Hearers have dead faith
So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
We must now ask, why do we “do”. I could stand here and tell you to go out and obey the word of God and live out your faith, but I believe it is necessary for us to ask “why?”

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
The first reason for our “doing” the word is given to us in verses 5-8
Jesus’s work in his life, death, and resurrection is what is the foundation of our doing
Jesus’s atoning death has set us free from the bondage of sin, that is what binds us to reject God and for many of you to be only hearers of the word. But upon believing in Christ’s death and resurrection we are now freed to begin “doing” the word.
Have the work of Christ in mind to “do” the word
My brother and I have a very rocky relationship. Recently he did something that made me burning with anger. I remember sitting in my office at church wanting to call him on the phone and lay into him for what he did, but I began to pray to ask God for help. And as I prayed I began to reflect on the cross, how angry God must have been to see people crucify his Son, but he did not lash out, no he loved them. And when i thought about that I knew that it was possible for my anger with my brother to be let go of.
Having the past work of Christ in my mind allowed me to “do” the Word.

Christ’s future work is the power for our “doing”
The second reason for our “doing” the word, specifically Philippians 3-4, is Christ’s future work
What is his future work?
That he will return
That he will rescue his people
That he will destroy his enemies
That he will be glorified as the King of Kings
Why does the future work of Christ, in his return, give us the power necessary to faithfully “do” the word?
We can be sure of the future work of Christ because of the past work of Christ.
It is sometimes hard for us to see this because we are finite beings that cannot see the future, but rest assured god has proven himself faithful time and time again through Scripture. So much so that his very speaking is his very doing. That if he says he will do something he will do it.
Therefore, because Jesus has said that he will return for his people to reign as the King of Kings we can triumphantly obey his word knowing that we are on the winning side.
So go, “do” the word.
